9 Beautiful Unfinished Basem*nt Bathroom Ideas | April Colleen | (2024)

If you’re ready and looking for inspiration for designing and finishing your unfinished basem*nt bathroom, here are some design ideas for your space that you’re sure to fall in love with and may help spark your own creativity! Here I am sharing the plan I created for our space. I installed everything in this simple, small bathroom design and love each one of them.

Just because your bathroom is in the basem*nt, and probably has no natural light in it, that doesn’t mean that it can’t have the sweetest character and details in it! It is a space worthy of good design, too.

As I began to think about completing our unfinished basem*nt bathroom, I wanted the space to be a sweet reflection of the home we live in and the people who would be using the space. So I started by putting together a plan for the design.

I scoured the internet and local stores for items that I loved and that would finally make this small, unfinished basem*nt bathroom a place that I wanted to have in our home.

This space would serve not only my children but my guests as well so it needed to be functional and pretty. It is 9′ x 5′, so roughly a 45 sq.ft. room that was only wood studs.

I have shared and you can follow the whole process of finishing the basem*nt bathroom in a recent series here on the blog if you want to check it out for more guidance and inspiration.

Unfinished basem*nt bathroom ideas for design

As I mentioned, every detail in this photo was used in the space and it all works so well together. Let me share the resources with you below.

1 // Paint: Sherwin Williams is my go to paint. I use it on every project. The color that is throughout the rest of our home is Pearly White. I wanted the flow of the main floor of our home to continue into the basem*nt so the entire house is Pearly White including this bathroom. I opted for any trim and door to match the rest of the home as well and be a nice bright white color.

2 // Unique Floor tile: Flooring is something that has a huge impact on a space and is almost always the first thing to be noticed about a space. Or not. Which is sad. I found the sweetest, most darling floor tile you have ever seen. It looks like a hand-painted cement tile but it is ceramic and costs far less. This tile also comes in a beautiful blue!

3 // Shower wall: Subway tile has been around since the 1920s and is a classic, timeless installation anywhere in a home. What I love about it is that is that it is inexpensive neutral. Depending on the pattern you install it in it can be more modern or traditional.

I chose this Classic white subway tile and installed 700+, one by one in the shower laid in a traditional brick pattern. Mine is a little larger than a standard subway tile and is 4″x 8″. If you missed it, here is my post on essential tools for tiling.

4 // Shower floor: I wanted something to transition your eye from the dark floors to the stark white tile walls in the shower as your eye moves up the wall so I chose a classic pattern of gray and white Carrara marble. You won’t believe I got this marble hextile on Amazon. They are 2″x2″ and set on 12″x12″ mesh sheets so they are really easy to install.

5 // Vanity: This vanity and sink. It was surprisingly affordable and from IKEA. The pros are that it is inexpensive, looks amazing, the sink and counter are one piece and porcelain, the drawers are lined with the cutest striped paper and they are soft close. The only con is that you can only use their faucet. But they have several to choose from including brass!

6 // Mirror: I opted to add a beautiful round mirror to soften all of the hard lines of the space. Everything has straight lines and the round mirror would add some softness. It sits at almost 3′ in diameter so it is a good size!

7 // Bathroom decor and accessories: I chose some simple black and white floral prints framed in aged gold frames to finish it off. I still plan to add some shelve over the commode and more decor, I just haven’t figured out what I want that to look like yet.

8 // Accent wall installation: I wanted something on the wall so I chose to install Board and batten with decorative trim moulding inside the boxes. I opten to paint it white like the rest of the trim and door. The bathroom is small and the floor is dark so I wanted the walls to be brightened up.

9 // Bathroom Hooks for Towels: I also needed somewhere for towels so I added hooks for towels (I love these aged hooks on Amazon) for some towels. I love to use Turkish towels in bathrooms (and they’re also great for the pool and beach)! These turkish towels hang nicely on a hook without being too bulky, are 1′ longer and 6″ wider than a traditional bath towel, are very soft, dry quickly, and come in a variety of colors and patterns that will go with your decor.

Bonus: I am thinking about wallpapering the rest of the blank walls now. I am considering a simple gray and white plaid wallpaper. It needs to be somewhat simple because I don’t want it to compete too hard with the tiles on the floor. Maybe a peel-and-stick paper in case I change my mind down the road. I have wallpapered A LOT in my life and you can check out how you can wallpaper, too!

I finished this unfinished basem*nt bathroom from scratch, from the studs that were there, and am having so much fun sharing all the details of the process of the build with you. I hope you have found some inspiration or that it sparked some ideas to get you going on your project.

If you haven’t followed along in the series, you definitely should. I have created an amazing reference for you full of unfinished basem*nt bathroom ideas and the process of how I did it.
