Back in June, at the showcase for physical distributor Limited Run Games, it was announced the Konami Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection would be receiving a physical release.

LRG has now announced pre-orders will open later this week on November 11th. There'll be a standard, classic and ultimate edition to choose from. Here's the rundown of each version:

Standard - $34.99 USD

This version comes with a copy of the game, and reversible cover art:

Classic Edition - $64.99

The classic edition includes a copy of the game, reversible cover art, a soundtrack CD, a sliver box with art by Tom Dubois, a retro-style dust sleeve and a reversible 18" x 24" poster.

Ultimate Edition - $159.99

In addition to all the Classic Edition content, this version also comes with a steelbook, arcade token style coin, a mini arcade cabinet replicaa / movie viewer - plays video and sound only, a "history of" book, and a Vic Viper Metal Figure.

Lmao I just..don't understand. Yep pay $160 for 35+ year old games that might be worth 10 cents.

Every time I see LRG mentioned, especially by a big company I get annoyed.

Why would it come with an NES box and sleeve when these are arcade games. Also lol at paying $150 for something that’s regularly $5 on the eshop. LRG is a scam.

@Tempestryke They’re scammers.

I get smaller developers using LRG, however, Konami is a big enough company, that they could have released a physical version of this (as well as the Castlevania/Contra collections), back in 2019. Mostly, I'm disappointed that I missed out, on getting a physical copy of the Contra collection, although I'm sure my usual gaming store will end up with copies anyways.

Awesome. I've been holding out for this, though I won't be buying either of the comically oversized (and overpriced) boxed editions for a glorified collection of ROMs that could likely all fit onto a floppy disk (maybe two).

@Lony85 : Ideally, Konami should have included all three collections on a single cart, charged US$40 or US$60 and called it a day. LRG is quite annoying as they so frequently sell games separately when they would make more sense as an all-in-one cart bundle (such as A Boy and His Blob, as the NES/GB ROMs for Switch are getting a separate "retro" release facepalm).

@Silly_G LRG aren’t developing games. They’re just packaging what developers make available. That’s something Konami has to make to have all of those games run off of one interface. That requires coding. LRG have no say or ability in combining games into one program like that

@VinylCreep : I know LRG doesn't develop games. Publishers can include multiple games on a single cartridge without having to consolidate them into a single unit of software, which doesn't require any additional effort on their end.

LRG's release of the DOOM Classics Collection spawns separate icons for DOOM (1993), DOOM II, and DOOM 3. Other publishers have also released physical releases that contain multiple units of software. For example...

Jeopardy! + Wheel of Fortune - Separate icons for both.
Hasbro Game Night - Spawns Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit Live, and Risk.
Atelier Dusk Trilogy - Self-explanatory
Atelier Mysterious Trilogy - This cartridge spawns no less than SIX icons: one for each game, and another for their respective picture galleries.
Ninja Gaiden Master Collection - Spawns separate icons for each game.

And just like any individual game, each game may have its own software updates, and their save data is separate to the other games on the cartridge.

Multi billion dollar company Konami, still using LRG when they can do it themselves. Disgusting on both accounts. These companies have no shame.

@SteamEngenius You'd be surprised by how expensive ports of older games turn out to be. Case in point: The Switch version of the Turok 1 and 2 Double Pack can go for as much as $170 on eBay.

I’m still waiting on LRG to send me the contra collection.

@Lony85 Idk where you live, but here in the states you can pre-order Contra Anniversary Collection from Best Buy for Switch and PS4. They still Castlevania Collection also. Best Buy gets most of the LRG releases months after pre-orders have ended.

I love Limited Run Games when they publish physicals for creative indies that would never get published by anyone else, like Ikenfell or Unsighted. LRG has a penchant for making diamonds in the rough really shine.

...then they also do things like this for companies that can more than likely afford to do it themselves, and it bums me out.

@SteamEngenius and all the other items, some of which are pretty substantial... also, as the name suggests this is a LIMITED RUN so this stuff has some rarity value; since these are really popular and historic games i'm sure resale value down the line would be pretty dang high

i'm not saying it's a GREAT price but saying you're paying 160 for "35 year old games that might be worth 10 cents" is real obtuse

Hard pass. I find myself not buying as many games because of less/no physical copies unless it’s some grand limited release. The Industry is phasing my generation’s business out. I find it very sad.

The mediocre lineup on the compilations isn't worth the 70 bucks. Most of my favorite Konami arcade titles were licensed. The Turtles, Cowboys of Moo Mesa, Bucky O'Hare, etc.

@Lony85

They probably will. The physical version of the Castlevania collection wasn’t all that “limited”. There were tons of copies floating around outside LRG once it finally shipped without much markup.

@Slowdive

Do you have a source on the Suikoden collection getting a physical release?

It's cool if you want physicals of all the Konami collections, but the game selection here is pretty rubbish. Konami like most of the golden era are sat on a veritable treasure trove of games, that they sadly never release.

hah Nintendo Switch game card slot has me double dipping every single title. We have 3 switches in play in my household tho between the wife and one of the kids so the cards get around. Wife currently is playing Witcher 3 and Minecraft on her lite.

I love this Konami collection. Was just playing the GBA collection last-night and will own the game card for this too.

I like LRG but the $95 markup here from the ‘Classic’ to the ‘Ultimate’ edition is really quite ridiculous.

This is the kind of thing i would love to see with Nintendos games.
Themed collections (hopefully handled by M2 since they do good work) of games in one compilation.

For example i would definitely buy a 2d mario collection with games such as mario bros, mario 2 US, lost levels, 3, world and all stars (since it has differences) maybe even including the Land games, doubly so if it was physical.

@SteamEngenius these games aren't worth 10 cents. They've got more value than your modern AAA game IMO.

@EVIL-C Honestly, this is no different than any other publisher deciding to publish another company's games. Happens all the time.
No, it's not really within LRG's originally stated goal (I think it was focusing on indie games), but then again few companies stick to it in the end.
In the end, it's whatever, another company doing business.

  • 1

  • EVIL-C

@KingMike It being Konami, one of the industry veterans, and LRGs original mission of shipping indie games being completely perverted, makes this a doubley scummy, BS scenario. Please don't make excuses for both these companies.

Not a fan of LRG too, but the Tom DuBois art book has me interested. Hopefully, I can get that separately somehow.

I have not felt scammed by LRG, but recognize it’s not for everyone.

I loved every single game I purchased through them even though I had to wait a silly amount of time for it.

Why does something have to be a scam or bad if it’s not something you’re interested in?

Clearly I’m missing something here. It seems like a business model that clearly works for them and at least some gamers enough to keep it going.

edit I also wonder how many of these comments are from people that own a business. From the looks of it, it seems like everyone…

@SteamEngenius "Might be worth 10 cents". Do you have any information to support that market appraisal?
I get a feeling if I check ebay, I'd find original PCBs selling for significantly more than that.
And if they were worth only 10 cents, then I don't think these collections would have sold very many copies digitally. At which point, I don't believe that LRG would have been interested in publishing this.

@EVIL-C Ultimately, it's just for-profit companies being what they are. Nothing to get stressed out over.

"Konami Arcade Classics" for me would be their licensed beat 'em ups (X-Men, Simpsons, Bucky O'Hare etc.) and sports games (Give & Go / Run & Gun). They should bring those and/or new entries to Switch.

... Wun can only hope.

@KingMike
THIS! Every time an LRG game is announced and posted on this site, I always check the comments to see all the p!$$ and m0@ning, mostly from EVIL-C (they were obviously violated/abused by an employee or something; next level time wasting that one engages in!!), that goes on.! It's truly amazing! That dude Jordan from SwitchWatch has an immense grudge against them as well (but backs Super Rare; curious, indeed.??), and while I think he's funny and find his videos entertaining, MY GOD, give it a rest! Like the majority of the mentally adjusted world population: don't like it? Don't buy it and move on!
Try it; "you" might actually enjoy free will...
