Summer Drink Recipe: Watermelon Basil Lime Mocktail (1)

My childhood summers ofteninvolved sitting on laws and drinking fruit drinks, otherwise known as Kool-Aid made from those little packets, with my friends. I'm still spending summers with my friends but the summer drink recipe is a little more grown up. You could say our tastes are a little more refined. Ok, who am I kidding, it's that we just don't want to mix up those little flavor packets with sugar.

Kool-Aid has come a long way baby.

Here's the thing though, I have the feeling my friends might raise their eyebrows at me just the tiniest bit if I tell them them our main drink at our next picnic is Watermelon or Fruit Punch straight from the bottle. BUT if I craft a new summer drink recipe using one of my childhood favorites, they will be none the wiser. Am I right or am I right?

I'm going to toot my own horn here and tell you this recipe is fabulous. You will be sad if you don't make it for your next night with the girls or grill out. It's that good. And you'll never really know this refreshing mocktail started out as your favorite childhood fruit drink. I won't tell if you have a second glass!

Makes 6 (ish) cups
Ingredients:

2 cups fresh watermelon
¼ cup fresh squeezed lime juice (about 3-4 small limes), plus limes wedges and slices for garnish
1 cup fresh basil leaves, stems removed
2 cups Kool-Aid Watermelon fruit drink
2 cups club soda

Directions:

Combine watermelon chunks, lime juice and basil leaves in your favorite blender and give it a few whirls until combined. Next, add the Kool-Aid Watermelon fruit drink and blend again.

DO NOT ADD THE CLUB SODA TO YOUR BLENDER. TRUST ME.

Pour the watermelon mixture into your pitcher and then add your club soda. Add a few fresh lime slices and stir.

If you're feeling particularly festive you can use your watermelon shell to create a bowl to serve your Mocktail out of. Way more fun than a punch bowl don't you think? If I'm using the watermelon as punch bowl I will double my batch depending on the size of the watermelon.
