An island is one of the most desired features for a kitchen. For proof, just check out this countdown of the most-saved kitchen photos on Houzz so far this year. Each kitchen here includes an island and offers ideas for colors, finishes, countertop styles and other special island design features. But a star is often only as good as its supporting cast. You’ll also find great ideas for kitchen cabinets, flooring, backsplashes, lighting and more.

10. Block Party

Designer Joseph Ward of Homewardesign and general contractor Matthew Harper of teamed up to create a classic yet casual style in this Mapleton, Utah, kitchen. Two butcher-block-topped cabinets cap each end of the large island to add additional storage and workspace. The wood tops and black bases (Iron Ore by Sherwin-Williams) also inject warmth to the otherwise white room. Custom milled solid white oak flooring in a herringbone pattern and custom turned island support posts add more warmth and style.

8. Neat and Narrow

A slim gray-blue island in this Chicago kitchen by adds style and room for seating on three sides. A mosaic backsplash tile in a tone similar to the island draws attention to the range wall, while antiqued mirror cabinet fronts on some of the upper cabinets on the sink wall and a custom hutch on the fridge wall keep the eye moving.

A cherry island base in a slate-colored finish coordinates with a range hood detail to add subtle but effective contrast to this otherwise white kitchen in the Washington, D.C., area by TriVistaUSA Design + Build.

Glazed white rectangular tile in a herringbone pattern runs wall to wall and countertop to ceiling, adding a bit of shimmer and movement. Cup pulls on the lower cabinets nod to traditional style. The perimeter cabinets are Alabaster by Sherwin-Williams.

4. California Dreamin’

Designer Madison Bettis of Madison Taylor used wood flooring and a wood island base to add warmth to the mostly white finishes in this Coto de Caza, California, kitchen.

With storage on the two long sides and a kitchen sink and trash and recycling center on the interior side, Bettis placed a microwave on the end of the island to give the family with kids an accessible spot to use the appliance without being in the main work area.

3. Center of Attention

Designers Kimberly Scanlon and Julie Tuerk of Vela transformed this Eagan, Minnesota, kitchen with a large island that features a jaw-dropping Midnight Fusion quartzite countertop with a waterfall edge.
