UFC 287 Results, Full ‘Prelims’ Play-By-Play! (2024)

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to Miami, Fla., TONIGHT (Sat., April 8, 2023) for the first time in two decades with a five-round pay-per-view (PPV) main event rematch between newly-minted Middleweight roost-ruler, Alex Pereira, running it back with former 185-pound kingpin, Israel Adesanya. In UFC 287’s PPV “305”-inspired co-main event, former 170-pound title challengers and South Florida residents, Gilbert Burns and Jorge Masvidal, will lock horns in a Welterweight showdown that could bring down the Miami-Dade Arena roof once the dust settles. We’ve got Kevin Holland, Adrian Yanez and Raul Rosas Jr., too!

BIGGEST, BADDEST COMBAT SPORTING EVENT! Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will make history inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Sat., April 13, 2024, staging the 300th pay-per-view (PPV) event since its inception in 1993. Alex Pereira will put his 205-pound belt on the line in UFC 300’s main event against returning former division roost-ruler, Jamahal Hill. In UFC 300’s co-main event, women’s Strawweight champion, Weili Zhang, will defend against top-ranked contender, Xiaonan Yan, while Justin Gaethje puts his “Baddest Motherf—ker” gimmick belt on the line against former Featherweight deity, Max Holloway, in an all-action Lightweight showdown. 185 lbs.: Kelvin Gastelum vs. Chris Curtis

Round one: Low kick from Gastelum to start things off. Quick exchange in the center, hard low kick. Some showboating before the next low kicks. Heavy counter 1-2 from Curtis a minute in. Gastelum comes back with a low kick, then a hard 1-2. Gastelum controlling the early going with volume and low kicks. Low kick exchange two minutes in. Lead left by Curtis. Low kick to 1-2 by Gastelum. He’s so much busier than Curtis so far. Solid left by Curtis as I type that. Two minutes to go.

Right hook from Curtis as well. 1-2s from Gastelum in return. Nice exchange. Another in the center. Low kick to 1-2 by Gastelum, who’s opened Curtis up above the right eye. Another 1-2. One minute to go. Good low kick, combos in center cage. Curtis catches him retreating with a straight left. Counter body shot. 10-9 Gastelum.

Round two: Gastelum falls short with a combo. He lands a low kick, but eats a lengthy combination in return. Heavy overhand lefts by Gastelum. Curtis attacks the body a minute in. Quick exchange. Curtis lands a clean two-piece, but gets cracked in the process and sent to his knees. Gastelum trying to pound him out, but slips off the top. He puts Curtis on the fence when “The Action Man” tries to charge. Curtis lands a knee and exits, then bangs the body. More body shots. Gastelum answers in kind. Big counter left appears to buzz Gastelum with two minutes to go.

Gastelum overhand left, Curtis body shot. Cross counter elft. Lead left to body shot to right hook. They’re banging it out. Things slow down a bit with a minute to go. Gastelum shoots, denied. Low-high right hands by Curtis. Another big body shot. Gastelum freezes him for a second with a clean straight left, gets blasted with one and a body shot in return. Long left by Gastelum kicks off a gnarly exchange. 10-9 Gastelum.

Round three: Looking back, that knockdown looked like either a slip or a headbutt.

Knee to the body by Curtis to answer a level change. Slick jabs land for hi, then a counter 1-2. Gastelum right in there with him. Curtis body kick. One minute in. Heavy punches from both men after a brief lull. Curtis getting the better of things but still eating some big shots. Curtis wades in and briefly gets put on the fence two minutes in. Counter left, double jab, head kick. Hard lefts by Gastelum in return. Right hook appears to hurt Curtis. Cracking hooks from Curtis in return. Big exchanges on the fence. Two minutes to go.

Gastelum briefly puts him on the fence. More body work by Curtis when they resume. Gastelum straight left, Curtis body shot. Gastelum puts him on the fence again and they trade knees with a minute to go. They’re emptying the tank. Sneaky elbow by Curtis, wading in with combinations. Monster shovel hook and knee. Gastelum coming back with big punches. Gastelum shoots, denied. Overhand left lands clean. More combinations piling up. Great fight. 10-9 Curtis.

115 lbs.: Luana Pinheiro vs. Michelle Waterson-Gomez

Round one: Waterson-Gomez tossing out a bunch of kicks that fall a foot short, as usual. Counter right by Pinheiro. One minute in. Waterson-Gomez low kick. Low kick from Pinheiro in return. She eats a glancing head kick and tries to answer with a blitz. Spinning elbow lands for Waterson-Gomez, who follows with a pair of kicks to the legs and body. Pinheiro low kick two minutes in. She tries a flurry. Looping hook connects. Teep by Waterson-Gomez to back her off. Both land low kicks back to back. More Waterson-Gomez front kicks that fall way short. Two minutes to go.

Waterson-Gomez fakes a level change. Low kick lands. Hard teep to the face knocks Pinheiro over. Pinheiro comes back with a leg kick. One minute to go. Pinheiro body kick. Waterson-Gomez threatening a lot of kicks, but gets blasted by a pair of nasty right hands in the final seconds. 10-9 Pinheiro?

Round two: They immediately trade in the center. Heavy kicks by Waterson-Gomez. Hard leg kick by Pinheiro trips Waterson-Gomez up. One minute in. Glancing head kick from Waterson-Gomez, who eats a low kick and counter right. Hard counter right from Pinheiro buzzes Waterson-Gomez and she charges after her with punches before tying up two minutes in. Knees to the body. She whiffs on some bombs on the break. Another hard leg kick. Low kick from Waterson-Gomez with two minutes to go.

Pinheiro catches a body kick, tries to land right hands. Single-leg attempt denied, good knee downstairs. Sneaky elbow by Waterson-Gomez. Stiff jabs from both, followed by a hard right from Waterson-Gomez. One minute to go. Inside low kick from Pinheiro, counter right blocked. Right hand to answer a feinted level change. 10-9 Pinheiro.

Round three: Waterson-Gomez falling short with punches. Axe kick goes wide. Pinheiro tries to rush in and gets taken down via single-leg. Waterson-Gomez grabs a rear body lock on the way up and lands knees downstairs. Pinheiro flubs a hip toss s minute in. Whizzer kick attempt, then knees to the body. They separate two minutes in. Pinheiro tries a spinning elbow, lands a low kick, eats one in return. Waterson-Gomez falls way short with a wheel kick, eats a body kick, lands a side kick. Pinheiro fires a couple more body kicks with two minutes to go.

Waterson-Gomez body kick to answer a left hand. Another wheel kick misses, body kick does not. Spinning elbow just misses as Pinheiro lands a left hook. One minute to go. Pinheiro body kick. Waterson-Gomez keeping her at bay with body kicks. Nice single-leg briefly gets her on top. She counters a hip toss and works in the clinch until the bell. 10-9 Waterson-Gomez.

Final result: Pinheiro def. Waterson-Gomez by split decision

185 lbs.: Gerald Meerschaert vs. Joe Pyfer

Round one: Meerschaert looks for a body kick that hits forearm. Pyfer head kick falls short. Teep lands for him after a right hand falls short. One minute in. Meerschaert head kick blocked, low kick lands. Both just miss with their power hands. Meerscheart sending out low kicks. Two minutes in. Hard 1-2 from Pyfer knocks Meerschaert back. Low kick comes back at him afterwards. 1-2 from Meerschaert, who eats a body shot and lands another leg kick. Pyfer answers a body kick with a 3-2 that floors Meerschaert against the fence. He picks his follow-up shots until the ref steps in.

Final result: Pyfer def. Meerschaert by TKO (punches)

115 lbs.: Cynthia Calvillo vs. Loopy Godinez

Round one: Calvillo pumping the jab in the early going. Counter 1-2 from Godinez. 3-2. Again a minute in. Body kick met by a Calvillo jab. Counter left by Calvillo. Godinez to the body. Mostly a touch-and-go boxing match so far. Calvillo tries a head kick, lands a left as they trade two minutes in. Hard 1-2 from Godinez, best shots of the fight. She tries to rush, mostly falls short. Two minutes to go.

Side kick from Calvillo. Hasn’t really gotten past sparring intensity. Overhand right lands for Godinez, who gets overeager and ends up on her back via double-leg. Half guard for Calvillo with a minute to go. Godinez regains butterfly guard. Calvillo stands over her and they separate. Combinations by Godinez. Close round. 10-9 Calvillo.

Round two: Godinez slowly advancing, answers a jab with a straight right. One minute in. Calvillo tries an uppercut. Counter right lands for her. She shoots, fights off a whizzer kick before separating. Counter right again. 3-2 by Godinez two minutes in. Just kind of a nothing fight so far, with Calvillo slightly edging it by being busier. Body kick by Godinez. Calvillo potshotting with two minutes to go.

Godinez continuing to advance, lands a right hand and body kick. Combos from Calvillo falling short. Left hooks by Godinez. One minute to go. Hard right lands for Godinez, who denies a level change and lands a body kick. Teep to 1-2-3. Think the late work edged it out for her. 10-9 Godinez.

Round three: Calvillo still working well behind the jab. Body kick from Godinez. Side kicks by Calvillo afterwards, Godinez comes back with a head kick. Good exchange a minute in. Hard Calvillo jabs answered by an overhand right. Continuing to trade jabs and Godinez’s nose is in rough shape. Counters by Calvillo, both land jabs. Godinez swats her with a back fist after missing a 1-2 two minutes in. 1-2, takedown defense, lead right. Fairly even at the halfway mark. Hard right hand by Calvillo as they trade jabs. 1-2. Two minutes to go.

Quick Calvillo combo; she’s recaptured the momentum. Hard four-piece. Short uppercut lands for Godinez as they exchange. One minute to go. Counter 1-2 from Godinez, two-piece from Calvillo in return. Godinez slips on a head kick, moves to a body lock, and tries to slam Calvillo to the mat. No dice. Some last-minute exchanges before the bell. 10-9 Calvillo.

Final result: Godinez def. Calvillo by split decision

160 lbs.: Ignacio Bahamondes vs. Trey Ogden

Round one: Both men open with low kicks. One minute in. Bahamondes landing the better ones so far. Double left from Ogden, who eats a body shot. Low kicks piling up for Bahamondes, who’s switching stance constantly. Two minutes in. Counter left. Low kick from Ogden in return. Low kick to jab by Bahamondes, then to the inside. Low kicks to body shots. Two minutes to go.

The length and activity of Bahamondes are doing work for him so far. Solid body kick. Another good low kick and he blocks a head kick in return. Low kick to head kick attempt. One minute to go. Ogden lands a right downstairs after eating a body kick. He backs away from a jump knee. Bahamondes falls short with a body kick, constantly feinting. Spinning back kick comes up short. 10-9 Bahamondes.

Round two: Bahamondes looks for a wheel kick among his more traditional attack. Left hand lands for Ogden. Low kick to front kick by Bahamondes, then a clean counter 1-2 after Ogden tries a combo. One minute in. Bahamondes easily turns aside a shot, then lands another low kick. He’s constantly switching stance and launching volume. Good straight left. Hard left hook by Ogden met by Bahamondes’ punches. Two minutes in. Bahamondes to the body. Quick straight left. Continuing to befuddle Ogden with feints and stance switches. Two minutes to go.

Body kick from Bahamondes, straight right by Ogden in return. Nice combo from Ogden. Stiff jab, eats a leg kick in return. Check hook, counter jab. One minute to go. More kicks from Bahamondes. Low kick to jabs, short right from Ogden in return. Both land before the bell. 10-9 Bahamondes.

Round three: Solid left hand from Bahamondes. Hard body kick. His volume and variety are giving Ogden hell. One minute in. Clean body and leg kicks. 2-1. More low kicks, counter left. Ogden sits down on a jab but he’s getting outworked. Two minutes in. Bahamondes in cruise control at this point, tearing up his legs. Two minutes to go.

Check hook from Ogden amid Bahamondes’ volleys, then a head kick attempt behind it. Body shots by Bahamondes. Spinning back kick with a minute to go. Both connect with counters. Wheel kick falls short, spinning back kick does not. Some more spinning and an axe kick attempt at the bell. 10-9 Bahamondes.

Final result: Bahamondes def. Ogden by unanimous decision

145 lbs.: Steve Garcia vs. Shayilan Nuerdanbieke

Round one: Both men throwing hard early, neither landing clean. Counter 1-2 from Nuerdanbieke as he eats a low blow, pausing the action. When they resume, Garcia tries that same naked front kick again, which allows Nuerdanbieke to floor him with a counter right. A few more punches appear to put Garcia out, but he wakes up enough to close up his guard a minute in. Solid ground-and-pound from Nuerdanbieke. Half guard against the fence, then a body lock as Garcia tries to stand. Two minutes in. Garcia turns to face him and puts him on the fence with double unders. Nuerdanbieke responds by slinging him to the mat and cracking him with another elbow before settling in guard. Two minutes to go.

Nuerdanbieke chipping away from guard. Garcia with a decent little flurry off his back. One minute to go. Garcia makes it to his feet and starts to chase. Solid left hands appear to rock Nuerdanbieke, who takes him down in response and fires a questionably legal head kick at the bell. 10-9 Nuerdanbieke.

Round two: Garcia firing big kicks early, then blasts Nuerdanbieke with a heavy straight left to hurt him again. After denying a level change, he rips Nuerdanbieke with a left to the body that instantly sends Nuerdanbieke fetal, completing an impressive comeback.

Final result: Garcia def. Nuerdanbieke by KO (punch to the body)

115 lbs.: Jaqueline Amorim vs. Sam Hughes

Round one: Solid right hands from Amorim in the early going. Hughes trying to get her jab going as they circle. Another clean counter right by Amorim. One minute in. Long-range double-leg puts Amorim on top in guard, where she sits out of a potential triangle and immediately moves to the back. Hughes turns into top position and stands, landing an elbow before Amorim changes levels again two minutes. Amorim runs the pipe to land on top in guard. Another quick pass to another quick back take and this time she’s got a hook. Amorim locks up the RNC, but Hughes somehow fights the hands and breaks the grip with two minutes to go.

Hughes stands, Amorim playing backpack. Amorim goes palm-to-palm, then figure-four; it’s under the chin but Hughes keeps breaking her grip. One minute to go. Amorim moves to mount, loses it, then trades hands as Hughes stands. One more overhand right at the bell. 10-9 Amorim.

Round two: Hughes pressures early, then waves her up after Amorim tries to pull guard. More pressure from Hughes and this time Amorim manages to lock her up in full guard. One minute to go. Amorim has a body triangle as Hughes tries to get enough space to chip away. Two minutes in. Now Hughes breaks free and stands. Amorim looking spent, tries a half-hearted shot and fails to pull guard. Another guard pull, back to the body triangle. Two minutes to go.

Amorim rotates for a kneebar attempt, but Hughes again breaks free and stands. Amorim’s slow to stand. There’s a nice level change from her with a minute to go. She falls back for a heel hook, can’t get it, then grabs a front headlock as Hughes scrambles up. Hughes responds with a takedown into side control. 10-9 Hughes.

Round three: Hughes continuing to pressure as a tired Amorim circles. Solid rights from Hughes, who tries a front kick and gets pulled into guard. Quickly back to their feet. Another front kick, another guard pull a minute in. Hard postured hammerfists from Hughes. Clean punches. Amorim trying to attack an arm two minutes in, nothing there. Left hands piling up for Hughes. Two minutes to go.

More heavy punches from Hughes, who elects to wave her up. More pressure from Hughes with a minute to go. Amorim shoots again and pulls guard again. Some hammerfists off her back before Hughes lets her up. They spend the last 20 seconds slugging it out, both landing well. 10-9 Hughes.

Final result: Amorim def. Hughes by unanimous decision
