First, what is quiet luxury interior design?

The quiet luxury trend originated in the fashion world and moved to interior design late last year.

A quiet luxury space might include neutral hues, streamlined silhouettes, sumptuous fabrics, warm woods, and pared-back decor — anything that evokes a relaxed, intentional way of living.

Terms to describe the quiet luxury aesthetic include minimal, refined, subtle, classic, neutral, understated, timeless, pared back, sophisticated, high-quality, and elegant.

No matter how you define it, quiet luxury style reflects a calm simplicity anyone can appreciate and adopt.

What is the difference between quiet luxury and old money interiors?

Quiet luxury is sometimes equated with the old money aesthetic — and while both looks embrace the art of understated elegance and luxurious living, quiet luxury design is generally more approachable, minimal, and contemporary, while old money spaces are typically more formal, embellished, and traditional.

How to bring the quiet luxury aesthetic to your home

To bring the quiet luxury look to your home, start with a neutral color palette, add in a mix of timeless and on-trend elements, then layer in some lovely textures through rugs, curtains, throw pillows, and blankets in sumptuous fabrics like velvet, cashmere, wool, and linen.

Quiet Luxury Interior Design: How to Bring the Trend to Your Home (4)Jenni Kayne

A quiet luxury color palette is generally warm and neutral — think rich camels, muted greens, creamy whites, soft blues, and washed out blacks — with minimal branding, embellishment, and pattern.

Materials in a quiet luxury style home might include millwork and wall moldings, stonework, limestone flooring, aged brass fixtures, weathered wood, stucco, marble, or travertine.

Since quiet luxury interior design is essentially understated, it’s easy to end up with a space lacking in personality, so when incorporating quiet luxury interior design in your home, make sure to add in some personal items, such as artwork, photos, or mementos from your travels.

Here are a few more tips for bringing the quiet luxury look to your home:

  • Stick with a soothing neutral color palette.
  • Incorporate jute, wool, or sisal rugs.
  • Choose soft cotton or fine linen upholstery, slipcovers, and bedding.
  • Opt for curtains and window coverings in cotton, velvet, or linen.
  • Incorporate plenty of candlelight and soft ambient lighting.
  • Display black and white family photos in silver frames.
  • Stack your favorite books on shelves, side tables, console tables, and coffee tables.
  • Use linen tablecloths and napkins for dining.
  • To create a quiet luxury look in the kitchen, display lovely items used for cooking, such as wood cutting boards and marble pastry boards, a salt & pepper cellar, a marble mortar and pestle, olive oils, and wood utensils and rolling pins gathered in a vessel.

For more ideas and inspiration, you might want to take a look at sites like Serena & Lily, Dear Keaton, Arhaus, or Pottery Barn, which reflect what the quiet luxury trend is looking like in 2024.

At the bottom of this post, I share some places to shop for quiet luxury style decor, as well as a few of my favorite pieces.

Quiet luxury interior design on a budget

Although quiet luxury style interiors embrace quality materials and finishes, adopting this look doesn’t have to cost a lot of money.

You can achieve the quiet luxury aesthetic on a budget by incorporating a mix of high and low pieces, shopping thrift and antique shops, making deliberate purchasing decisions, and curating your spaces over time.

Start by looking at your home with a fresh eye and using pieces you already own and go from there. It’s all about creating a beautiful life — whatever that looks like for you!
